Meet Gunika: My Dad, Singapore and training at Clifford Chance
Hi everyone, my name is Gunika. I have just finished the final year of my LLB degree at the University of Leicester and I am a Future Trainee Solicitor at Clifford Chance. I didn't have the ambition to become a lawyer when I was younger but as I grew older I realised that the law surrounds us and controls every aspect of our lives. My role model is my dad who is an excellent lawyer and I have seen him be so strong and courageous in order to support his clients. I wanted to have his incredible knowledge about the law and be as confident as him and this is what made me want to study law at university. I love the problem-solving aspects of legal work and the fast changing nature of the law.
The last few years of law school have been a big journey for me both professionally and personally. I started law school as a timid and shy student but I am now more confident in my abilities and always ready to face a challenge head on. I spent last year studying law in Singapore as part of the year abroad element of my degree and it was the most challenging year but also the most rewarding. I grew out of my shell and explored a new legal system and interned at a Commercial Litigation firm in Singapore. During my year in Singapore, I realised my interest in Corporate and Commercial law and this started my journey to exploring the commercial field and successfully gaining a vacation scheme (internship) at Clifford Chance. My vacation scheme was an incredible experience where I sat in Private Equity and M&A seats and explored the culture of Clifford Chance. I realised that this is a firm where I could reach my full potential and learn from world leading lawyers in corporate and commercial law. I have just begun my LPC and will be joining Clifford Chance as a Trainee Solicitor next year! I am excited to see where this journey will take me and I am ready to tackle any challenges I will face.
My main advice for aspiring lawyers would be to take every opportunity they have to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves. This is when we can truly see what we are capable of and reach our goals. Be proactive and never stop believing in yourself even when it gets hard. Your perseverance and hard work will pay off.
I would love to connect with students and lawyers, feel free to connect with me on my Instagram page @my_legal_diaries where I document my legal journey and offer advice. You can also find me on LinkedIn!
Thank you so much!
